Simsbury River Oaks Project Manager Invited to Participate in Conference on Leading National Environmental Design Program for Neighborhood Developments

SIMSBURY, November 29, 2007 – Stanley C. Glantz, project manager for Simsbury River Oaks, has been invited to be a panelist at a conference discussing the leading national environmental design program for neighborhood developments like Simsbury River Oaks will be.

“I am honored to participate in a conference talking about the cutting edge methods for environmentally conscious site selection and design for mixed-used neighborhood developments,” said Glantz, senior vice president of Konover Development Corporation, developer of the proposed mixed-use project on Route 10 in Simsbury, adjacent to the Avon town line.

“The fact that I have been invited is recognition that Simsbury River Oaks will employ those cutting edge environmental elements,” Glantz added.

The invitation came from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The Green Roundtable, the New England Chapter of the Congress for New Urbanism, and the Sustainable Development Committee of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association, all sponsors of the conference on LEED-ND on Friday, Jan. 11, in Boston.

Simsbury River Oaks will be accepted as a LEED-ND (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development) pilot project through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) if the proposal to construct the mixed-use development is ultimately approved by the Simsbury land-use commissions. Konover Development is currently waiting for the Simsbury Zoning Commission to create new regulations that would allow residential, office, hospitality and retail development on the same site before proceeding to the next step in the land-use approval process.

LEED-ND is a new national rating system that promotes sustainable growth by codifying green building standards into neighborhood design such as what the Simsbury River Oaks mixed-use design will be.

LEED, or the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system developed and administered by the USGBC, is a well-known and highly respected nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED-ND goes beyond a single building to extend the environmental design, construction and design to develop an entire neighborhood.

“The LEED program is the leading edge of environmental compatibility for development. We all know that developments can have environmental impacts. What LEED does is establish best practices and mitigation standards.” said Glantz. “We are committed to making sure that Simsbury River Oaks will meet the criteria set by the USGBC.”

Simsbury River Oaks is a mixed-use development containing residential, retail and office components on a 60-acre site on Route 10, adjacent to the Avon town line. It offers an opportunity to enhance Simsbury’s lifestyle while adding $4.03 million in new net tax revenue for Simsbury. It will be unique, yet will blend well with the style and substance of the Simsbury residents know and love.
